Martin fragt in seinem jüngstem Blogpost: “Warum fotografierst du eigentlich?”. Sehr spannende Frage! Ich habe schon in einen kurzen Kommentar auf diese Frage geantwortet, aber ich will noch etwas mehr dazu schreiben.

Angefangen hat es bei mir mit der Fotografie wahrscheinlich wie bei vielen anderen auch: man hat hier und da Fotos geknipst, im Urlaub, auf Parties oder einfach nur so. Aber es war eben nur knipsen, kein fotografieren. Gibt es dazwischen einen Unterschied? Ich denke schon – fotografieren ist viel bewusster als einfach nur wild auf den Auslöser zu drücken.

I have a shiny new photoblog.

I wanted to give my photos a distinct place (apart from flickr) and I felt, it’s too much a mess up, when I post my photos here between the normal text articles. So here it is, a clean and simple interface, with focus on the pictures themselves.

Under the hood is a wordpress installation with the k2 theme and the nautilus style (just a bit adapted). The site is also cooloris-enabled (i.e. it has a media rss stream). Cooliris is a cool add-on for Firefox (unfortunately it does not run under Linux ) which let’s your browse image galleries in an amazing way, unleashed from your browser window.

Fotos mit selektiver Colorierung, sogenannte Cut-Outs (diese Technik wird auch Colorkey genannt), sind immer ein Hingucker. Dabei handelt es sich um Schwarzweiß-Fotos, bei denen das zentrale Motiv (oder auch ein anderes Element des Bilds) farbig ist. Wie man solche Effekte mit Hilfe von GIMP erzielt, wird in diesem Posting erklärt. Zunächst braucht man natürlich erstmal ein Foto, dass man selektiv colorieren möchte. In diesem Tutorial wird als Beispiel das Foto mit dem Schmetterling benutzt, das Ergebnis der selektiven Colorierung ist in dem Foto oben zu sehen.

Weil es so schön war, gleich noch mal: ein neuer Gastartikel von mir auf kwerfeldein.de, diesmal zum Thema “Sind nachbearbeitete Fotos noch authentisch?”.

A bugfix of the 2.6 release came out. Some minor bugs have been fixed and translations have been added. You can get deb files for 32 and 64bit Ubuntu from getdeb.net.

And the best news: Finally there is a binary for Mac OSX Tiger. Simone from lisanet has built a package and provides it on her site. That is great to see (and it works, I just tried it on my MacBook) because it seems to be really hard to build a package, I didn’t manage to compile a working binary on my machine (and solving all the dependencies seems like hell!). So a big thanks to Simone!

Download Gimp 2.6 for Ubuntu 64bit

I use Ubuntu on a 64bit machine, so I also packed a zip file with all necessary deb-files for 64bit Ubuntu. The debs are from getdeb.net. After unpacking you can install them with the command

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Aonther issue was, that I wanted to try Gimp 2.6 on my MacBook. The only binary for Mac OSX I found was from gimp.app didn’t work for me, I guess it was compiled for Leopard, but I am running Tiger. First I thought I just wait until someone releases a binary for Tiger, but then I gave it a try tp build a Gimp 2.6 package for Mac OSX Tiger myself. It was pretty difficult to solve all the dependencies, but in the end I could build Gimp 2.6. Unfortunately the application dies with a bus error when I try to start it. I guess it has something to do with Python, I read that it’s not so uncommon that python apps crash on Mac OSX with a bus error. I am using Python 2.5 and additional modules from MacPorts. Does anyone have a hint?
